Does anyone know anything about soldiers cooking with hay boxes?

I have a hay box at home, actually made with sheep's fleece, which I may start to use while camping

I have read they were used by soldiers, presumably to avoid lighting a fire for long enough to send out a smoke signal saying 'we're here' but I don't now which century.

My immediate thought was, check in Scouting for Boys if you can find a copy.
I'm fairly certain Baden Powell covers hayboxes (although it is a very long time since I read the book and no longer have my copy) and his experience was largely military in South Africa at the end of the nineteenth century.
Not heard of anything before that.
