Medlars

Post by SteveC »

We've been given a large bag of medlars and are wondering what to do with them.
Does anyone have any historical recipes? We do ECW so we'd been looking in the ~1580 to ~1650 time period.

Thanks

Steve

Medlar jelly is divine & period. Be sure to let the medlars blett first to get the most juice & flavour.

Blett?? Elucidate, please - not that I know anything about what to do with medlars, it's just the word that I don't know.

blett just means to soften by almost-but-not-quite rotting. Its one stage on from, for example, an apple going a bit soft and squashy

Old Norse blett, past participle of the verb blanda (to mix or blend), so "blended". Mushy might be another translation.

Thanks! So that will be referring to most of the fruit and veg that my offspring don't like then, and don't eat... :D

Isn't there something about medlars on the Ch 4 series the Tudor Monastery Farming thingy? Keep longer than plums apparently
