Late Roman Belt and scabbard
Stuff I finished over the summer for Marc Byrne of Britannia for his early 5th century Romano-Brit officer kit.
Belt plates from RQP, based on the Oudenberg plates, which I tinned. Sword is by Tim Noyes with the eagle pommel being modelled and cast by Toby/Silver Wyvern.

How do you attach the brasswork?

Re: Late Roman Belt and scabbard
For the top set, interference fit. The scabbard is slightly tapered, as are the fittings.
As the weight of the whole thing is bourne by the upper fittings, security isn't an issue.
The bottom set is tapered too but I put a couple of small brass panel pins into the back, through the fittings and into the wooden core at the edges, just like on the original.

Re: Late Roman Belt and scabbard
Can't be doing with it. I've easily distracted when I'm working (cups of tea, interesting stuff outside, Radio 4 etc) so anything that has to be used quickly doesn't feature very highly on my list of useful items.Phil the Grips wrote:So not the double-aspect of the goddess Araldite?

I'd wondered about something like that myself, so that's good news!Medicus Matt wrote:The bottom set is tapered too but I put a couple of small brass panel pins into the back, through the fittings and into the wooden core at the edges, just like on the original.
Do you do the brass-work yourself and is it hot or cold worked?
It is a lovely piece of work (like so many that you make...).

Re: Late Roman Belt and scabbard
I always anneal the brass before doing any work on it, be it cutting, filing or forming. Otherwise everything takes twice as long and you run the risk of it cracking. I just heat to cherry and then quench in water.Colin Middleton wrote:

Ta. Got a couple of interesting pieces to make over the winter. I couldn't do it for a living though. It is a lovely piece of work (like so many that you make...).
