Migration Period scabbard.
You know how sometimes you finish making something and then stand back from it for the first time and go..."Yeah, yeah that turned out alright."?

And you, sir, are looking for a discount on your next scabbard.redwald wrote:You sir, are a master scabbard maker!

Thanks Paul, and everyone else.
Now, if only you buggers would be prepared to pay enough for me to make them full time......then I'd get heartily sick of it and wouldn't bother any more.

Very nice work. Having watched my dad make a full authentic sheath for his new Staffs Hoard sword I know just how much time and hard work is required to complete a project like this. Your leather embossing is magnificent too.

Matt's Dark Age stuff is really nice.
Matt, how long have you been making Dark Age scabbards for, seems the Dark Ages are a real draw to you.

Re: Migration Period scabbard.
Cheers Skev, your good taste are only exceeded by your looks and intelligence.
I've got a rather special commision to do over the winter and I've only just managed to find a source for 1.5mm thick slats of poplar that are split from planks rather than sawn (most early medieval English scabbards were willow or poplar, a few used beech or birch and all were made by forming very thin lathes of wood rather than carving a hollow into flat planks).
Next step is to find a skin from a period appropriate breed of sheep, one with long straight hair fibers and very thin skin, rather than the curly haired, thick skinned sheepskins you normally find.
Making something that looks good and feels right for the period is one thing. Making something that you can really claim to be 'authentic' is quite another.

Thanks for the compliments. Much appreciated.ChaseAED wrote:Very nice work. Having watched my dad make a full authentic sheath for his new Staffs Hoard sword I know just how much time and hard work is required to complete a project like this. Your leather embossing is magnificent too.
Really 'Fully' authentic would be impressive."a full authentic sheath".

The Dark Lord then drew a veil over the thread, truly sending it to a deeper and darker place, maybe even as far back as a Darker than Dark Age.

Re: Migration Period scabbard.
Yes Chris, a period of history where learning was forgotten, where pens were used as ear scoops, where the use of candles was minimal and, in Britains case, a time when people rode cows instead of horses and walked around in clothing akin to sacks, they also started eating mud at this stage, and had the inability to shave or wash (and that was just the women), you see after the might and learning of Rome was drawn away Britain descended into a mire of poop from which ungodly and criminal things sprang, namely, Saxons. Lets face it, out of all of them freeloading over here, only about five of them could write, and their spelling was quite shocking too, they tired to hide this by drawing little birds and things on the corners of pages, they also forgot on the whole that building out of stone was better than wood, they forgot how easy the wolf huffed and puffed a wooden house down, and this carried on until they were trounced by William, a FRENCHMAN! and for that, the worst of all sins they were, and shal remain deeply fettered in 'The Dark Age'.

You could have lingered after molesting me from behind on Saturday. As it was, I was left feeling distinctly...used.

I would willingly have stayed and pestered you more, but the other man was stuck on the stall, and I had been gone for at least half an hour. One has to balance debauchery with practicality.Medicus Matt wrote:You could have lingered after molesting me from behind on Saturday. As it was, I was left feeling distinctly...used.

It's better if you can simply get them to stand around the stall long enough for a small debauch, thereby not having to worry about leaving the man behind the stand to worry.

Ah, but the gentleman in question is such a floozy, so has to limit the number of places he stands for his debauchery, or he'd never get round the market.
He looks all innocent in those tweeds, but I don't believe it for a moment.
