Odd opening hours, though - I have yet to pass it when it is actually open, looks like it caters to the quality end of the craft cloth market, which is no bad thing.
Weds Sat only 10-am - 4pm, Fri(?) 5.30pm.
Another craft shop has opened up behind in the street House of Fraser (just cut through the department store) , looks like it only stocks party or cardmaking stuff, but has a knitting / buttons / notions /beads section.
There is large haberdashery shop located in the IN SHOPS complex at CWMBRAN shopping center ,south wales . Also another smaller one to be found in the high street EBBW VALE both in south wales .Also another in ABERGAVENNY just of the high street , MONMOUTHSHIRE. .
For anyone in the West Country, there's a traditional haberdashers in Malmesbury, Wiltshire.
Malmesbury sits midway between Swindon, Cirencester and Chippenham and is about 20 miles from Bath and about 35 from Bristol.
"Cotswold Stitchcraft" is opposite Malmesbury Abbey.
I should come clean and admit that it's my wife's shop.
However, we do also "do" 18th century, so we understand the problems in making costumes and obtaining supplies and will be happy to help like minded re-enactors whenever we can!
The thing about all haberdashery shops is that they are having trouble competing with the Hobby craft shops and the internet.
There is a Franklin's in Colchester, Ipswich, Dovercourt and there is I think one in Sudbury.
Theres about 3 in Exeter, Devon I cant tell you what their called but their in the city center and are purfect for south-west re-enactors.
"Sir!, The English Amada are due south!. What are you talking about what Amada?. Nothings amada with me sir whats amada wit you?!?!?!?!" The Simpsons.....LOL
Theres one in Harrogate too. 'ull has a couple places including Hobbycraft
in Guernsey theres a specialist habberdashers in the Creaseys chain-its located in the old town opposite an artists shop. Theres also one or two in Jersey.
Lancaster- Fabrix. Good range of period wools and linens (which they've stocked on request)- their price is very variable but good service and usually include a discount on reenactment-size orders. http://www.fabrix.org.uk/
Yet another in The Bridge in St Sampsons, Guernsey, they also do repairs. Range is focused on cross stichers. Also on St Peter Port and in the old town is a Polish tailoress who also happens to do a bit of haberdashery too alongside her main activities. Some of the touristy shops also happen to stock assorted bits and pieces although more incidental than intentional. Strange that there should be 3 proper places to go when the population is only 66k however there are a LOT of ladies at leisure so lots of needlework activity on the island, knitting circles and so on, regularly advertised in guernsey press if any of yu ever come over.
I own a haberdashery shop in Malmesbury, Wiltshire called Cotswold Stitchcraft. I can be found near Malmesblury Abbey in Gloucester Street, SN16 0AA. I am open six days a week Monday to Saturday 9-5pm.
Jon and I like to make 18century costume so the shop is full of suitable goodies
Come and see me, or phone 01666 823245.
We are planning a Civil War Living History weekend throughout the town next year. I don't usually make this period costume so I am looking for patterns. Patterns for working day cloths are available, does anyone have suggestions where I can find patterns for Royalist costume. I have Janet Arnold book 1.
Any other suggestions please?
For those looking simply for cloth, look for Ash Fabrics on Leicester market. Nicely priced wools, linen and calico, stock changing all the time. Because he sells to the student fraternity quite a bit theres always something a little different if you have an alternative project in mind. Located near to the town hall side of the market the majority of the time.
Theres also Stuarts Fabrics in the small units in the middle of the market. Great selection, a little more pricey and tends more to be seasonal with wool.
There you go!
Neil
