Derby Dec' 2007
Is it too soon to start a Derby thread?
Anyone got any details or warning orders?
The 13th, 36th and 47th should be there, any others?

Yes, Derby is happening - on the 1st and 2nd December; Swarkestone on the Saturday, and a march and service in Derby on the Sunday, usual time from usual place (Wilmot Street).
Sadly, there will be no battle on the sunday this year, due to redevlopment of the battle site.
On Saturday, 11am onwards Crewe and Harpur powder issue.
12 noon, start of first battle with stunning government victory.
12.30pm, start of Jacobite relief headed by His Royal Highness to retake the encampment.
1pm, all over bar the torturing of certain cats and laying of wreaths etc.
Vic.

Yup, they're digging up the Green and putting in a footbridge over the river there, new paths etc. They are also planning to turn the BPC statue around to face the river (frustratingly). The Green is boarded up while work takes place, so there is no access to the statue or the grass. It is a shame for this year, but that's why we are compensating with the expanded battle plans for Swarkestone....
... which is the skirmish I always prefer anyway!
Look forward to seeing you all there,

If we can't get to the statue, I assume no wreath laying?
Why do they want to turn the statue round, won't it be facing the wrong way?

Aesthetics. pure and simple aesthetics. or so I was told (possibly by George)
how many highlanders will it take to correct the orientation one quiet night in December?

Yes, you're right about the aesthetics. They want BPC to be pointing down the green and over the new bridge. We did mention the whole north/south symbolism, but to little avail. I think they thought I was mad.
As for wreaths, we are hopefully going to lay them in the Cathedral, where there is a large memorial stone plaque marking the fact that the Prince attended divine service there.

Young men have often been ruined through owning horses, or through backing them, but never through riding them: unless of course they break their necks, which, taken at a gallop, is a very good death to die

If anyone thinks they might suffer withdrawal symptoms from missing the Sunday skirmish there is a video of the 2006 event on YouTube.

Dear Mr Booth,
We must thank you on behalf of myself and Our other supporters, for what you say is indeed true, and not much more can be said. Therefore We hope you will lead us onwards to victory: for, if We may so say,
ON YOUR HEAD BE IT.
His Royal Highness,
Charles Stuart, Prince Regent, Duke of Rothesay.

Sadly I will not be able to make Derby this year due to work issues.......i.e. having too much of it to do. I am really disappointed as up until today it was looking like I would make it down. I hope all of those going have a great time anyway.
It does mean however that the money I had put aside for going can now be spent on more kit!!
I do hope the forces of righteousness prevail, and the Prince Regent's arms are blessed with success.
Cheers
Neil

I've been rumbled...the huge cost of transporting my wardrobe for 2 days of afternoon and evening attire was indeed a consideration Pete!!!

Arran thank you for your kind comments. "Last to arrive, first to leave" I think is the Johnston family motto so we're always close to the Prince

Seriously though, sorry to be missing it this year. I was looking forward to it as I've not been down for a couple of years, plus I had some new clothes to swank about in.
It has made me determined to ensure we get Glenbucket's organised in plenty of time for next year with transport etc. so we can get a maximum turnout.
Cheers

Thanks to all those who took part and/or came to watch. It is quite unbelievable how we manage to sort the weather out each year!
Swarkestone was excellent this year, and I look forward to the return of the Sunday battle for 2008 - but it was a fine showing all round.

The battle on Saturday was the best I've event done there. Thanks to all the Jacobites who followed the some what complex orders (due to the very narrow road) I gave.
There were only 3 Jaocbites there with swords only, and it was impressive to see so many muskets, well done.
The Redcoats turned out in good numbers as well.
Sunday was a bit short of people, but special thanks have to go to Flemming's 36th who were the only Redcoats to turn up.
The RaT end of year meal was the first of many to come, thanks to all the members for their support this year, at times I need it!
