Battle, East Sussex has a traumatic past and the ghosts are ever-present, but the dead cannot speak. Eschewing the talking head interview and subjective interpretations of history, 'The Lost Battle' was filmed on location at the 950th anniversary 're-enactment' of the Battle of Hastings. By observing this staged 'spectacle', we attempt to both mimic and undermine simulations of the "real" in televised docudramas.
Created for submission to University of Sussex as part of the MA Digital Documentary, 'The Lost Battle' depicts a 'tribal' ritual that rather than honoring the fallen, is representative of a collective search for lost identity in the form of simulated violence. In turn, we attempt to call into question the glorified representation of war in mainstream 'Hollywood' fiction film by appropriating its very tropes and in turn, blurring the distinctions of documentary and fiction film.
