ANOTHER Viking shield creation thread.

Postby Jaybee » Wed Feb 04, 2015 9:37 pm

Yes yes i know, ANOTHER one of these.
But running into some slight issues with the roundshield i'm making!
1. Nails, what nails should i use to make this look authentic?
2. Rawhide. Most of the shields i have seen are rimmed with brown leather, but rawhide is white (I think?) So are there better alternatives?
3. Attaching the rawhide, but what is best? Nails every inch or so? Or bound through holes drilled into the shield wood?
4. Painting. With what paint is best? poster? Acrylic? house paint?
I'm sure i'll think of a few more but thanks in advance guys :D

Is this purely for battle re-enactment, or a replica?

I ask because the construction will be very different from the fragments of originals that exist.

Generally, re-enactment shields are plywood (3-ply tends to work best for durability), with an oversized steel boss pinned with domed-rivets, or square nails (5-5 1/2 mm diametre). Rawhide from wilkos or pets at home will do well - best to drill and sew as tacks fall out - although an abrasive-shanked-13mm-carpet-tack will do. Seal ply with varnish or PVA, cover (glue) with hessian or linen before bossing it, then paint over that for added durability. Matt emulsion will do for paint (in a reasonable toned pain of course - avoid dadaist artwork...)

If you are constructing it as a replica, pretty much ignore all of the above...

Does anyone know which episode of Time Team they showed people making shields and if so is it on you tube? I think it was around 2004. They even made authentic glue from gone off milk

You might be thinking of the episode of Mick Loades' series on Medieval Weapons, where members of Regia Anglorum made planked shields and tested them:-
