Wanted: tent / advice on tent buying

Postby Wynflaed » Tue Feb 22, 2011 5:42 pm

Good folk, lend me your ears... and your experiences of buying authenti-tents. I'm in the market for a Saxon/Viking era A-frame tent (suitable for 2 people, preferably with side opening). It's a biggish investment so, before I spend my cash, does anyone want to share their opinions of tent suppliers? e.g. was it as waterproof/hardwearing/stable as advertised or did it spring a leak/sprout mould/collapse when someone snored too loudly? Might I just as well make my own?

Any recommendations or anti-recommendations gratefully received. And if anyone's looking to sell second-hand, I'd also be interested in discussing that.

There’s a country in Europe where they treat their ex soldiers with pride no waits for medical treatment after injuries received during service, no amensia from the government. Cant for the life of me recall where it is but I know exactly where it is not.

dont know about who does what tent styles but generally I would recommend both vic james and past tents though there are many other good makers around too.

avoid some of the tents imported from places like india, they can be bought cheaply but will cost you more to then go and buy a decent one as well

My Vick James geteld has lasted me 14 years, survived a storm force wind at Porchester, thunderstorms on Hadrian's Wall and Somme-like conditions at Kelmarsh without complaint. It's served me well and is just about to get sold on to finance the purchase of a new linen geteld from Poland.

Thanks guys. I hadn't heard of Vic James, but three recommendations gives me a good incentive to ring him and see what he can do. Out of interest Matt, which Poles are you buying from?

Matuls. www.matuls.pl
I've been thinking of switching to linen for a while and last year I decided I wanted a side opener, so I'm getting one of these...

Is that just the fabric or does it come with the wood work as well?

The list price includes woodwork but you can buy them without, which makes shipping a LOT cheaper, which is what I've gone for (seeing as I can easily get coppiced ash poles).
Drop Tomasz a line, his English is considerably better than my Polish.

I've ordered a tent from Vic James. Now I can get on with deciding what designs I'm going to paint on it :D
