I've been away from re-enactment for a few years now (15) but i'm looking to get back into it. Can anyone tell me how the early dark age period is these days. How many groups, what kind of events etc, any help would be appreciated.

Lighter, with less hessian and better shoes.
We've mostly stopped calling it 'Dark Age' for a start (although there are still lapses from time to time).
Arthurian isn't commonly used either (it'd be a bit like calling the late 12th century 'The Age of Robin Hood').
There's a couple of 'late roman' groups still about (late roman is more popular on the continent) and there's quite a lot of interest in early Germanic 6th/7th century stuff at the mo (lots of very sexy high status kit) but, AFAIK, there's only one society that deals specifically with the bit between the end of direct roman rule and the establishment of the first English Kingdoms and that's Britannia, under the firm but softly yielding leadership of 'Papa' Dan Shadrake.

Don't listen to the rumours about us. They're mostly true but don't let that put you off.
