Frankish (600-800AD) clothing sources

Postby Jeroen Zuiderwijk » Mon Feb 18, 2008 2:23 pm

I'm looking for direct sources for a layman's outfit for the Franks around 600-800AD. So far I know some details about fabric etc., but finding information regarding the actual clothing is proving rather difficult. Does anyone know any finds or good depictions of Franks and their clothing from that period? I know there's a big difference between Saxon and Frankish clothing (Franks seem to have worn much brighter colored clothing, and longer cloaks f.e.). I know finds are really scarce to non-existant. But any ancient textual descriptions or iconic depictions are also helpful.

The franks were importing cloaks from England so I doubt they were longer.

From what I read, Charlemagne was complaining that the Anglo-Saxon cloaks were useless, because they were too short.

What about the Utrecht Psalter? It is a little too late but it is full of pictures and online.

Check out this website http://www.alamannin.de/Franken/start.htm -although it's in German, may be useful.

There's a discussion on this (and arms and armour) on another forum here with quite a bit of useful data and some good links to sites with a lot of pictorial info.
