Bee hives

Postby FionaDowson » Thu May 21, 2015 7:40 pm

Does anyone know anything about recreating a Roman bee hive? All I can find is that Virgil wrote about them and that there were laws governing beekeeping in ancient Rome

It would be worth getting The Archaeology of Beekeeping by Eva Crane out via interlibrary loan (you are unlikely to be able to buy a copy easily) she also wronte another,World History of Beekeeping and Honey Hunting, though I think there was also a more easily sourced booklet on the same topic put out by IBRA a decade or so ago.

Also perhaps this paper: http://www.equinoxpub.com/journals/inde ... /view/2717
and this one: http://www.ibra.org.uk/articles/Beekeep ... cient-Rome
