Does anyone have any links to Roman hats/headgear (not helmets)?
Did the Romans (1st century AD) wear any kind of arming cap under their helmets?

The anser is that no one really knows about Roman helmet liners from this period - there is a suggestion for later Roman military that the pillbox hats shown in some depictions acted as arming caps, so its down to you to come up with an interpretation - I have a leather 'spider' glued inside my coolus, padding would probably be just as appropriate. Might be worth trying to contact Mike Bishop (archaeologist who specialises in Roman Military, edits the Journal of Roman Military Equipment Studies) and see if he knows of anything.

Yes, the Romans did- both literary and archaeological evidence.
Here are a couple of links

And here

And here is a link to an "arming cap" found at Dura - third century, though.

Re: Roman hats/arming caps
Hi
Anyone still interested in this thread might like to read my latest book, 'Roman Military Dress', published by the History Press. I tried to find as much evidence as I could on this topic and included some rather spectacular hats found in Egypt.
Graham.
