Depends on if you are legionary or auxiliary and how much of your kit you are prepared to make yourself. Legionary, if you buy it all, you will be lucky to get much change out of £1,000. Auxiliary will be less but still a fair bit if you buy it all.

Auxillia, with later undoubled mail, run to about £300-£400, but we are providing some kit much cheaper then retail.

A legionary is only more because of the lorica. If you opt for mail then it's not much more than an Auxillia.

We have britons as well, and a basic british warrior is about £80, with shield and single hand spear. Again we make gear inhouse that is cheaper (and better quality then retail).

We just subsidised a buy of gladiator helmets (£35-£40 to the members), can make the padding, shields and all the weapons inhouse, so it's around £200 for one of them.

I think a fully equipped Roman soldier is nowadays alot less than other periods. Even later periods, without armour, have the addition of a gun to think about.

Do you make your own shields, pila, belt fitting etc yourselves? Otherwise, last time I looked a shield, two pila and a balteus and cingula would set you back around £500 quid. Plus the lorica plus a couple of hundred for a decent helmet (although they may be cheaper now with GDFB etc)

We have sourced pila for a reasonable price.

We have a group member that makes shields and lorica for a very reasonable price (to group members)

We also have another group member that can make all the belt fittings for a reasonable price for group members.

So, yes, you can equip as a legionnary in our group for under £1000.

:-)

Love me, love my curiosity
