Wooden Trumpet

Postby Julia » Mon Sep 03, 2012 6:05 pm

I am interested in the idea of getting a early medieval trumpet, something suitable for use in the 11th-12th century. I know of literary references to trumpets being around then, and the Swedish Navalür is claimed to be a design that is 1000 years old, But I am wondering if anyone can knows of evidence for such devices in the UK. I am failing to find anything useful on my usual sources.

Anthony Baines's "Brass Instruments: their history and development" mentions the Pictish stone from Hilton of Cadboll, which depicts two trumpeters playing short straight instruments. His drawing shows the trumpets more clearly than the stone itself now does.
