Eran ud Turan - Arsacids and Sasanians, 3rd C BC - 8th C AD

Eran ud Turan - living history and military displays from Persia, Central Asia, and India between the 3rd Century BC and the 8th Century AD.

Drōd ud spās ō šmāh!

I'd like to present my very new living history group Eran ud Turan - we are looking for both participants and events. Our main focus at the moment is the 6th and the 7th Centuries AD, however, there are plans to go further back and slightly further forward in time. Of particular importance is the 1st Century BC and the Battle of Carrhae, for which we are also planning a commemorative event (in the UK). This time period and area is largely unknown by most, and completely underrepresented in living history, despite being extremely important in the global scale of things, as well as having a large impact on both the Romans and the Chinese to each side.

The basic rule is: if your impression fits the timeframe, and exists between India, Central Asia, and the Euphrates, then it's good to go. This covers a large variety of impressions so the variety within the Sasanian, Sogdian, and Gupta courts can be shown, as well as interactions and influences between the cultures.

We take accuracy very seriously, but at the same time acknowledge that sources are scarce and doing a good job of interpreting them can be difficult. Not to worry though - a few members of the group are eminent and published historians with expert knowledge of the period. The main focus for the first few years will be the living history camp, but we are working on cavalry as well and aim to have three fully armoured horses (and armoured riders, of course) - in addition to un-armoured horses - by the 2016 season for cavalry displays. When numbers allow, we will also put up formations of infantry as well. Of particular interest for the living history camp are a number of genuine period coins, which can really add to the display.

We are mainly in the Midlands, but have members as far away as Sweden and Poland, and are happy to travel around the country for events.

As we are very new we do not have a website as yet. You can PM me here or email at: eranudturan [at] iranhistoryforum [dot] com. We are on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/eranudturan?ref_type=bookmark

Just a quick update - we have merged with A Moment in Time. This has reduced the setup costs for us and given us access to A LOT of events per year, in addition the MIT group get our display at their events - a win-win for all.

Currently we are focusing on the 6th - 8th Century and plan to expand to include Khotan and Tibet as well.

If I was ever going to get out of the musket era (and had the time and money to do yet another impression!) This would be it!

Nearest I will be doing a bit of 18th Century Indian...
