New group wanted N/E England

Postby whitehalifax » Mon Aug 20, 2012 4:44 pm

Hi , My name is Paul, I live in Washington Tyne & Wear . I've been reenacting for many years, in fact I do it for a living, Iam a self employed historical interpreter. I run a Roman gladiatorial group up in the north east but Iam looking for a new period to get my teeth into. Unfortunately I don't drive so I need a group who has north east members with the possibility of sharing a lift and fuel costs.

Iam into most periods except Napoleonics,Saxon & Viking . Can anyone tell me of any other groups in my area please ? Or give any help at all ?

Thanks all,

Paul .

Hi Paul,

There are some groups up in our area, but not many. I know that BOTWOTS (doing Border Reivers) are in Redcar, but with the same difficulties as me in travelling (I don't drive either), this might be a bit of a stretch

However, I myself belong to the 'Time Bandits' group, where we carry out historical interpretation in eras ranging all the way from Egyptians to WW2 and beyond - members tend to pick and choose what eras they want to do. For instance, I'm more interested in medieval - ECW periods, especially with me shooting a longbow, so I tend to concentrate on these areas. In fact we will be at Alnwick castle on Thursday doing medieval, and we also carried out a succesful event in Durham Market Place covering the Battle of Neville's Cross.

But the Time Bandits cover a lot else, even including the 'Late shows' (1940's) in Newcastle and 'Jack's Back' (Sherlock Holmes and the Ripper Case) in Ouseburn! We've also been recently doing Victorians at Preston Hall and even a stint as the slaves of the Daleks at Woodhorn!!!

Lifts and such can be arranged, and we always seem to get all of our lot into cars - in fact, I think we hold the world record for how many people and how much kit you can get into one space!

If you're interested, our group is led by Dr John Sadler, and if you put him into Google you'll get his home page. On the side bar you'll find a section about Time Bandits. Or, if you want, you can P.M me and I'll put you in touch with him.

Hope that may help,

All best,

P.R :)

No problem, just thought it might help. Yes, John has mentioned you before, so he'll know you I think. If you do decide to join us, you'd be made very welcome! As I said, we'll be at Alnwick on Thursday all day, so if you fancy a day out and a chat, feel free. Failing that I also know that we are at Newcastle Keep on 8th Sept, doing ECW for the Heritage Open Day, also might be in Sunderland the day before for the same but that's not confirmed as yet.

All best,

P.R :)

I've sent John an email just to let him know that I might be interested in joining, still have the transport problem though and no kit for any period to speak of. I will see what he says if he gets back to me.

Just checking, but the e-mail address you sent it to - was it the btinternet one? If it was it's the wrong one. He changed it recently and hasn't altered it on the site it seems! (He's not the most technologicaly switched on person in the world...) :?

His actual e-mail is: john.sadler@islmail.co.uk

All best,

Oh, that's us!

We're based in Hartlepool with a couple of members from Stockton and Newton Aycliffe. We primarily focus on combat, with our current LH area pretty much built to support that - but we would like to find a couple of individuals who really want to focus on the LH aspect so we can improve that part of our display.

Transport is the tricky part though, since we seem to head south or west for most events meaning a fair old detour to come and get you. We're also struggling to some degree for transport space at the minute - (but are in the process of trying to secure a van which would help a lot - but difficult to know just how much until we use it!)

Saying that, we only have 2 events left this year (one is this very weekend) - so if you want to join, it would probably be more for next season - difficult to know how we would stand by then for transport.

btw, we're focusing on mid-13c - our LH area has the basics (cooking area, weapons storage+display, some cover) and would really like to add some specialised crafts or demonstrations to our setup.

I'm looking for a group to join that do either 14th or 15th Century, I have VERY basic kit of a white linen shirt that ties off and neck and cuffs and a pair of brown joined hose. I do have basic combat experince and I have battlefeild expirence but as a non-com stadard bearer. I don't have any head gear, armour, weaponry or my own transport. I live in Esh Winning, near Durham.

Hello Squire John,

Now that's what I call an odd co-incidence - I live in the same village as you! From what you've said you've got a bit of kit, and I belong to the Time Bandits multi-period group led by Dr John Sadller who is based in Belsay, Northumberland. I too don't have transport of my own, but manage to get back and forth with the aid of public transport and lifts from members of the group. As I said, we cover a lot of periods but you can pick and choose what you do, and we do cover the 14th / 15th Centuries and also the Border Reivers as well.

At present I'm at sea (I'm an offshore assessor) and only have limited access to the net, but will be home sometime next week (approx the 2nd / 3rd October) and if you're interested then p.m me with you're phone number I can contact you on my return, or just leave a message in the this thread and I'll pick it up when I get back.

Hope to hear from you,

Regards,

P.R

Hi Aelle,

Just managed to get online on the ship, but not so easy in a force 9 gale as we are in at the moment to type! In short yes Time Bandits covers early periods as well, basically we go from saxon / norman to WW2 and beyond. As I posted to Squire John, if you want I can contact you via P.M or this thread when I get back and give you some more details.

Just hoping to get this week out of the way and get home! Will be transferring off this ship tomorrow to another in harbour and then out again to transfer to another ship where we'll be working again, so might get the opportunity to check the forum, but then again might not until I get home.

All best,
P.R

Thanks very much Phoenix :) ,yes,if you could send me some details,i'd be very interested, though,at the moment,it's a case of curiosity,as i'm still wondering quite what to do,i.e go solo or join a group (that, and the fact my kit is in need of,er...attention,given i've recently changed periods),thanks again and i hope the ship to ship goes well  .

No problems Aelle, will do when I get home. Ship to ship went okay, bit of a sudden awakening this morning and into the boat to transfer at 07.15, and have been busy ever since, so only just managed to check on this tonight! Just glad the weather calmed down a bit, but our side of the country got some pasting didn't it?

Mind you, saw my first water spout this afternoon, so its been a very interesting trip this time!

Hoping Squire John also sees this as I'll also contact him if he wants when I get back - trouble with the net connection from the ships is its not very fast, so better to do that.

All best, and hope you were okay in the weather,

P.R
