Norah Waugh, Nancy Bradfield, Jean Hunnisett, Linda Baumgarten are all great sources of information.

also the cunningtons (philys (sp?) and c.w.), james laver, eileen ribeiro, the visual hiostroy of costume books published by batsford (the separate volumes are better than the all in one, but now out of print). And the costume in detail books from the v&a - avril hart and susan north did the 17th/18th c one.
