My wife is looking to make a Bal Maiden costume (ladies that worked above ground in Cornish tin mines - 1800s). she has found a lot of images, but does anyone know of any patterns available? especially for the Gook (bonnet)? She also needs some leather clogs with wooden soles, any idea for suppliers?

No help with the patterns, I'm afraid, but I am interested in images of Cornish people wearing clogs.

For actually obtaining clogs, try http://www.nw-clogs.co.uk

Lesley Bentham of Yes! We Have National Costumes might be able to help. As far as I know, she's not on the web and I don't want to put her address and phone number here. However, her daughter, Tanya Bentham, contributes to this site, she does amazing embroidery & tablet weaving. Might be worth contacting Tanya to pass a message on to her Mum.

They look pretty similar to a Lothians "ugly" but with more in the neck and less in the crown - might be worth comparing notes with Scottish costume historians.
