braiding for a WW1 dutch officers' jacket

Post by danbot »

Hi,

I am in need of some help with braiding for a military jacket. This is my first military jacket of this style and I'm struggling with the front of the jacket and sourcing braiding.

Having trawled through a variety of websites most of the things i've found look too narrow, 3mm. The braiding on this jacket seems very thick and tubular.

Does anyone know of suppliers for this style of braiding? I'm not worried about 100% accuracy but I would like to find something similar.

Many thanks,
Dan.

It looks like russian braid. Do a google. You could try Della Rebours. It's the sort of stuff she sells.

If no joy with Della, drop me a message. I have some of this but I think it may be too thin for your needs but I do have a Dutch friend who may be able to help.

I have just typed 'black russian braid' into "a well known Internet auction site" and the first result was for 7mm braid, which seems to be what you need, at £2.25 a metre.

It's a square cord on the front and shoulder. 3/1" or 1/4" (6mm) black mohair I think. Collar is a 1/8" (3 or 4mm) orange russia braid. Probably silk on the original but could be mohair too.

Worsteds were only used on O/R's uniforms. Officer's had silk or mohair if not using gold or silver cording.
