English Civil War period hats for men

Postby Phoenix Rising » Thu Oct 23, 2014 5:17 pm

Hi folks,

Does anyone know of a good supplier for men's hats that would suit for the English Civil War period? Looking to buy something that looks the part but isn't going to cost a small fortune!

Any suggestions would be appreciated,

Thanks,

P.R

type? status? materials?

Do you want a knitted hat to go under a pot, something felted and brimmed? a montero cap? scottish bonnet style?

if you put up a pic then people will be able to help.

http://www.griffinhistorical.com. A delicious decadent historical trifle. Thick performance jelly topped with lashings of imaginative creamy custard. You may also get a soggy event management sponge finger but it won't cost you hundreds and thousands.

Are you in a group? If so it would be best to ask the other group members what they wear.

There are knitting patterns for Monmouth hats on ravelry.com. Easy to make if you knit in the round but make sure you get a yarn which will felt - Merino wool works best and, being from Oz, is fairly easy to obtain

I'd actually suggest avoiding Merino for a Monmouth or most other historic hats, it felts far too well far too fast and you won't get the finish of the original. Choose a more robust British wool and you'll be happier with the end result even if you have to work a bit harder to get the felting started. Also, be very careful which pattern you choose, there are some good ones out there, and some awful ones that perpetuate re-enactorisms like a purl turning row.
