Wool sellers in durham or N/E?

Post by Phoenix Rising »

Hi folks,

Looking to make a new doublet and some other items, but can't find a decent purveyor of wool for such a project - anyone on the list know of any in the durham / N/E area? Any help / suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Andy

Can't think of any specialists, really - there are odd market traders who carry bits and pieces, and john lewis in newcastle has the odd bit now and then, but really your best bet is to get to Torm or one of the other markets, or to try and contact the anne laverick or cloth hall directly for mail order. I pretty much gave up trying to buy wool retail years ago in the north east, as its so hit and miss - and often what a market trader thinks is wool is a mixed fibre anyway, and will be cheaper at Torm

Cheers Tanya - 'hit and miss' really does describe the situation, although I might have found a place not far away from me. Spoke to them this morning and although they no longer carry wool (having gone over to quilting stuff) they used to deal with reenactors and still have some suppliers etc were they might get some.

I'll follow up your suggestions as well though, and also maybe Bernie the Bolt as well as I've seen him mentioned on this site, although not sure what his prices are like etc.

Not looked into buying wool from him but I know Bernie the Bolt does good prices for linen so hopefully his wool won't be too expensive. Herts fabric is a decent price and I've seen it mentioned a few times. Not tried them myself though so can't comment on quality.

Ta for the replies! I've contacted Bernie and I'm gettimg some samples / prices from him - also been in touch with Herts fabrics as this was also mentioned to me by a friend.

All best :)

I bought some beautiful 100% melton wool from one of the haberdashers in the Durham indoor market...they are hit or miss, but when they have good stuff it is really good
