slynging or foot weaving

Postby 40/- freeholder » Wed Oct 26, 2011 1:32 pm

Can anyone point me in the direction of any printed or online instructions on how to do this? It's the technique described in Woven Into the Earth for making borders on the Greenland hoods, but the diagram given there is too schematic to work out how this is done.

I have a book called - En Vikingemarkedsplads. ISBN - 87-87902-65-6. It's in Danish but the section onbraiding has useful illustrations, including "slyngastocka" which, I assume, is the sort of braiding you are after. It invloves hanging 4 cords vertically - each weighted at the end - and two people slinging (throwing) the weights in a predetermined pattern to each othe to braid the cords.

I think the one you mean is also the one known as Hald or Viking whipcord, which doesn't involve feet.
I make the bobbins for it, it's great fun and can make some lovely patterns if you get a good rhythm going with your partner :$

Thanks for the responses but I think we are talking about different things. The sketch in Woven Into the Earth clearly shows a circular warp with heddles, tensioned by the foot.

Hi, I know what you mean, and I had a chat about it this summer. Let me get back to the lady I was talking to, and refresh my informations, and I'll post it here. It IS quite interesting

Circular warp? Sounds fascinating, will be waiting eagerly... is it anything I can make the heddles for, if it is "authentic"?
