Used clothing in the 18th century

Post by Shadowcat »

I know I have read an article about used clothing in the 18th century, but don't remember what or where. Does anyone else have a reference for me?

As a side bar, do you know if used clothing was shipped to the colonies in America for re-use?

Grateful thanks for any clues.

Without fighting through,I'm sure it's in 'Dress of the People'...As for Colonial stuff...This has been discussed on some US forums and no evidence was found to support it.........

The article you may have been refering to was in the Costume Society Journal for 2010, although the article covers bespoke/ready made garments of 18th C, I think it also covered used clothing if I remember correctly.

Thank you - I have that "Costume" but also another 25 or so volumes, and couldn't face the thought of searching all of them. Your help is much appreciated.

You can do a quick search here:

Frustratingly the text isn't available unless you pay or have a sub, but it might help to be able to see the contents of each volume easily.
