Trim colour?

Post by sally »

I'm currently planning a Victorian day outfit for c1893/4, its currently planned as a dark blue wool skirt with a deep band of bluey-grey velvet as guarding round the hem and also as the integral belt/girdle, and there will be a little cut away jacket in the same bluey-grey velvet to wear over a white blouse. Its all rather neat and restrained, but I think the junction between the velvet and the wool could take an application of braid, and I may use the same shade to bind the edges of the jacket just to perk things up a bit.

I'm thinking maybe a gimp braid for the skirt trim and a bias edging for the jacket, but what to go for, I could go darker, and use a black trim, or I could go brighter and use a violet or a sky blue maybe? Its likely the whole ensemble will be worn with a straw boater, so I can use this shade to trim the hat as well.

Any inspiration for choices of colour? The navy is a very dark one, and the velvet is a slate shade.

Black, in my opinion, is used on an awful lot of Victorian clothes. I have several metres of stuff that might work, and am dispersing my stock. Will send samples.

Sounds rather nice. Definetely black. Narrowish flat black wool braid, although if you are velvetting, personally I'd have a narrow black velvet ribbon and let the textures do the talking so it doesn't detract from your fabrics.
Is it 'coz I is middewl clarse, aih?

Sounds like a good plan, many thanks Suzi, would love to see your braid. I was wondering about that slightly swirly gimp braid, I've seen that on original dresses and wondered if that might make a nice break between the velvet and the wool?

I'm about to go and look - I have wool, in a sort of swirly, circular-ish pattern, plus a silky look one and... and...and...wait and see! (Nothing modern.)
