I want to make my son of 11 a victorian waistcoat, which is the best fabric to use for this?

As "Victorian" stretched from 1837 to 1901 it would help if we knew what period of waistcoat, whether day or evening, and what status.

Its a school project he is doing for working class/poor status. He has not been given any dates, just to say its victorian.

In that case I would have thought a tweedy wool, not too heavy, would be best, and a linen lining.
