button placement on fall fronted trousers

Post by sally »

possibly a silly question- but when putting buttons on the flaps of fall fronted trousers, do you attach them so that the button faces inside, giving an invisible closure, or so that the button shows through onto the outside of the garment? I just can't quite decide looking at original drawings and paintings

Button outside, as far as I know - that's what I do anyway, and what is on all breeches I've seen so I guess the same goes for trousers.

Mine face out but I couldn't say that they all did.

Just checked various books with photos of original garments, and they all face out, including trousers.

excellent, thats what I did. :) Just got the hem the dratted things now and have another go at beating the seams into submission- that wool fabric is like memory steel, you get everything ironed flat under a damp cloth, turn your back and its all sprung back to its original shape again, grrr
