Plucked, Shaved & Braided: Medieval and Renaissance Beauty and Grooming Practices 1000-1600

Authors: Daniela Turudich, Laurie J. Welch
Format: Paperback, 198 pages
Publication Date: June 2003
Publisher: Streamline Pr
ISBN-10: 193006408X
ISBN-13: 9781930064089

Ive been searching for this book for months, I would sell my own grandmother for a copy, well, depends on the condition :D

Ive tried every site, search, rarebook site you can think of and so far nothing.

If any one has a copy to sell (not likely) or knows of a place to get it I will be very VERY grateful.

Seems to be a self-published effort, so while you could contact the publishers ( http://www.streamlinepress.co.uk/contact.html ), the best bet is probably inter-library loan, since the 6 UK legal deposit libraries are guaranteed to have one copy each.

you could also try a couple of specialist costume booksellers - they might at least be more aware of it than a normal bookseller.

there's a lady who's name I don't actualy know, but who does the re-enactor's market (sorry - probably not that much help).

there's also r.d. franks in london - costume / fashion specialist bookshop.

Try Black Cat Books and also John Ives. both specialist secondhand costume books.

Google should give you their addresses.

AFAIK, the publisher went bust, and the book never reached the market. The last I heard about it was 2005 (Yahoo group Authentic_SCA, message 49247), so perhaps the author succeded publishing the book later.

If you find it, please let us know.

I don't believe it ever came out. It was due to come out bout the same time as my book, and I kept an eye on the publicity for it because of the obvious overlap of topics, but it never seemed to materialise.

http://www.allbookstores.com/author/Dan ... udich.html

Seems you can buy it in the U.S. according to this site?

S.

Just had a look at the site myself, and it appears to repeat the "non-availability" thing. So no help there then - sorry.

[see earlier discussion on thimbles for me needing to pay more attention when shopping... ]

Cheers guys,

Like Sally says, there does seem to be some confussion as to wether the book actually came out. Lots of sites have it listed but 'out of stock' some sites say they will search for it. I tried emailing the publishers but heard nothing, if I get a chance to ring them and speak directly I will do.

Ive rang streamline press in Leicester. Not much help, the woman who answered the phone just kept reiterating they were printers and not publishers. She said she couldnt put me through to any one because the call would just come back to her.

Just a thought, were there particular details you were after that you havent found in my book or the other sources on early cosmetic practice? Its possible I may be able to point you at other bits of research if you are after something specific that you havent found elsewhere

There was nothing specifically, just being book greedy and wanting to collect as much info as poss as beauty & make up is going to be my living history thing.

IF you dont mind, I would like to PM you if I need clarification on subjects? As I'm putting my potions together and what not.

Course you can. Are you also on my EarlyPerfume yahoo group? Might be stuff in the archives there that would be of interest
