Air America by Chris Robbins

Post by Marcus Woodhouse »

3rd Edition ISBN 978-1-9080-5901-7, Cassell non-fiction (part of Orion Books), 2012 (first published in 1979).
Written with close reference to those who flew or serviced Air America and other clandestine airlines in Africa, South America and, of course, Asia from the 1940's with the American Legion in China to Contragate in the 1980's, with an update with regard to the actions of the CIA in the global war on terror since 9/11.
Most of the book focuses on the secret wars in Laos and Cambodia where Air America became the not so secret airlift wing along with the way the airline grew and changed as the conflict did.
Frightening, fascinating and funny and deeply moving as failure upon failure led to it being mocked and stigmatized. Great book.
