The Roman Army - Greatest War Machine of the Ancient World

Post by Stuart Quayle »

Just a very brief review of this excellent book published by Osprey and Edited by Chris McNab.

The four quarters of the book cover in extensive detail the:

1. The Early Republican Army;
2. The Army of the Late Republic;
3. The Earlier Roman Empire;
4. The Late Roman Empire

beautifully illustrated by Richard Hook; Adam Hook; Christa Hook and Angus McBride.

Loved it! :thumbup:

Hello Stuart,
I have no idea how a forum works........ so i hope you get this message.
We just moved to the Isle a few weeks ago and I saw a photo of your armour in the RGS mail. Then I found you on this forum.
My son of 11 just loves making armour. He has done so since he was very young.
Up till now he has only made cardboard armour. (Tried to inclode a photo but could not manage)
Coming week we are going to work with fiberglass.
Is it possible for him to see your collection somewhere on the Island?
My e-mail address is: jsteenbeeke@maassennet.com
Hope to hear from you soon,
Jolanda

Stu,

I have not seen it but will keep my eyes open for it. Is it the standard sized Osprey book or one of the super Osprey books they have been releasing lately like the medieval knight title?

Hi Randall

Yes, exactly as you describe it - one of Osprey's 'super-books', hardback. The author Chris McNab really seems to know his stuff 8-)

Just re-reading another excellent (recently released) and very comprehensive book on Roman military at present, by Stephen Dando-Collins entitled "Legions of Rome - the definitive history of every Roman legion". Its really informative, excellently illustrated and damned good value even at £35 no less.

Will post a review about it soon.
