Robin Hood (2007/8 BBC) - worst historical drama ever?
Posted: Sat Nov 22, 2008 4:16 pm
I know there are a number of candidates for it but was wondering what people thought about the recent Robin Hood series and my personal belief that its the worst historical drama ever portrayed on tv?
I really tried hard with it - but every episode was worse than the last. I genuinely don't know where to start - miners strikes one week? a, erm, casino night the next? I think on reflection the spaceship on Red Dwarf is a closer portrayal of 12th century Nottingham..
Certainly even more embarassing when compared with Robin of Sherwood from the 80s - alright a few dodgy aspects to it (Jason Connery wasn't the best move for the 2nd series for a start) but overall some magnificent performances (Nicholas Grace as the Sheriff of Nottingham particularly) and some very insightful episodes e.g. anti-semitism in England at the time, the ongoing battle between Norman aristocracy and Saxon populace, and particularly the only drama or film I know of brave enough to have a poke at Richard I. Spot on!

Why not do this properly, like the Razzies?
Can I reccomend that a new poll is organised, listing the other TV productions of the year (Bone kickers, Merlin, etc.? Give it til end of December and then press release it - it's likely to be picked up too.

Based on the fact that I couldn't even get through one whole episode I would say Bonekickers is worse than Robin Hood.

Both are dire, but I managed to watch more bonekickers than robin hood. At least their costumes were meant to be 21st century.

It would probbally be possible to make a good comedy/drama about archeologists. There must be plenty of eccentric real life characters and amusing anecdotes to draw on for inspiration. It would certainly be better than the sub Da Vinci Code cack of Bonekickers.

At the time of writing, there are 13 votes 'for' and 4 'against'. We know that Simon reckons Bonekickers is worse - but not necessarily worst-ever. Come on then Simon - is Bonekickers the worst ever for you?
We'd have to redefine the competition as 'worst ever use of historical events in a TV drama' since 'Kickers isn't actually a historical drama - it's modern-day tosh with bad historical drama inserts to illustrate the characters' imaginings.
What about those other three voters? What other nominations do we have for the Re-enactors' Razzies?

Surely to qualify it must be a drama based on historical events? Which it isn't, so it can't be the worst.
It is crap but it isn't an historical drama.

'Drama based on events the makers would like you to think are historical'?
'Worst ever drama purporting to use historical events'?
But it probably wouldn't be picked up without a snappy title, like 'Worst Historical Drama Ever!' (preferably said in the voice of Comic Store Guy from the Simpsons).
And the discussion if it is picked up might do some good in future script discussions. (Hey, it's the end of the working week, I'm allowed to don my rose-coloured spectacles now...!)

Well Bonekickers is certainly the worst drama, historical or otherwise, in recent years. Worst of all time? Well it's up there but there's probbally been some right rubbish on over the years that I've forgotton about or haven't seen.
