Tobacconalia

Postby Joolz » Sat Feb 04, 2012 9:42 am

My latest little project:

Last year I got myself a clay pipe – I consider them to be an 18thC period impression must-have item, as their use was so widespread. However, along with the pipe there comes a whole range of period pocket-fillers and smoking paraphenalia (tobacconalia) such as pipe-tampers, tobacco pouches, matches/match cases etc.

And if you wanted to prevent your clay pipe from turning to dust in your pocket, you really needed a pipe case. So I thought I would have a go at making some.

I made a couple of small, simple ones from beech and a slightly longer, more elegant one from an antique piece of mahogany. The sharp-eyed amongst you may notice that I haven’t yet attached the hinges and catches – I’m waiting on some teeny-weeny brass hinges etc. but it shouldn’t take long to finish them.

Then I thought I would play around with a novelty design, and you may notice I’ve cut some blanks for pipe cases in the form of the ever-popular little boxlock flintlock pocket pistols carried at the time for personal defence. Yet another little project to finish……..

I figure the shape of one of these little pistols would really suit a pipe case, and I found a nice little snuff box in the shape of a double-barrelled flintlock pistol, so there's definately a historical precedent. Watch this space.....

Children turn away - this one's for the Grown-Ups!!

Last night's snow put paid to my evening's plans to go out, so I stoked up the fire, put on a little music, and whittled myself an 18thC pipe tamper.

I've always wanted a one of these saucy little gentlemen's pocket fillers - you can buy pewter reproductions pretty cheaply, but I wanted a boxwood one like the originals I've seen. So I made one.

So here 'she' is - only a few inches long but anatomically correct for a right leg (including the right number of toes!!) and with a racy lacy garter on, too.

Oooh, naked ankles, a bit of thigh, a shapely calf - I may have to have a cold shower......

Lovely leg, and very clever. I'd love to see what the flintlock case looks like when it's done.

I made up a few more of these last night, in front of the telly, all carved from boxwood. I've been working out the technical aspects of carving the boxlock pipe cases above, so I thought I would try making one as a pipe tamper. There's also another saucy leg (shod, this time) - these are fun to carve - and a nautical one which gave me the chance to practice my chain link carving. Sorry for the bad focus on some of these - my lousy camera skills.......

And a pic of the flintlock in action, as it would have been used back in the day, to tamper down tobacco in the pipe bowl.

Were you on the old UKPB?
Shame we lost all the info there, but I posted up a mini box plane snuff box as well as some rather funky carved and inlaid pipe cases.
Do you take commissions, I'm ambisinister when it comes to anything but basic woodbutchery, as I'd love a pipe-case?

Prob'ly a daft question but do you have or have you seed Domestic Utensils of Wood (Owen Evan-Thomas 0854420525)?

Hey Grymm,

Yes, I used to post on the old UKPB as Jewels (I'm signed up on the new one, too, but it's a bit dead). The thread on tobacconalia on the UKPB was superb - we could do with another one like that!

Domestic Utensils of Wood is one of my 'bibles' - I have made lots of stuff over the past few years that come directly from those pages, from seam rubbers to egg trays, from stay busks to powder flasks and everything in between.....

Let me know what it is that takes your fancy and I'll see if I can oblige.

Cheers, folks.

I don't usually make stuff for general sale, I just make them for my own amusement, or to add to my collection and ever-growing display of treen at home. If you're intereseted in asking me to make up something specifically for you, send a PM and I'll see what I can do.
