Valsgarde 6(ish) repli - my first attempt at metalwork

Wes ├żu hal !
I've just finished my first ever attempt at metalwork, a slightly ambitious crack at making what was to hopefully be an at-least collector-grade interpretation of a Vendel Era helm mostly based upon the Valsgarde 6.
It's taken me a month and a half to complete, starting with little more than sheets and bars of brass, bronze and steel, a little cast-bronze dragon strap-end, some mail offcuts, and a range of unauthentic tools.
My hands are sore, and I can't deny I may have expended my enthusiasm for creative projects for at least 12 months, but at least the results of my labours will be a joy forever.

What do you guys think? Was it all worthwhile?

Thanks to Dominic Tweddle (for helpful diagrams in "Anglian Helm of Coppergate"), Thorkil (who's work was a helpful reference, though far beyond anything I could ever hope to own), and my dad Dr Andrew Thompson for invaluable advice throughout the project.

Well done - you have really captured the spirit of this piece.

Looks bloody good to me. I wouldn't want to face a guy wearing that.

In fact I would !! as chances are he would be sooo fussy about his kit he probably would't want to get in to a full blown tare up :D also - he wouldn't be able to run for any great distance or enter any water if he were to fall.
I dude I don't like to tangle with are the feicers painted blue with their underpants on insideout beltin ya with sticks !

but really really really nice helm ! 8-)

Thanks for the positive replies. In comparison to many of my dads vendel and Saxon era helms this one is actually quite lightweight probably due to the framework construction. That being said, all the weight, in truth, is in the mail curtain.

I'm doing a more thorough report (in short installments) in the Projects section of the Thegns website (link in signature).
