Fantasy Artist needed.

Postby lawrence » Mon Oct 27, 2008 7:37 am

For those of you who don't know me I'm a mosaic artist who specialises in Greek and Roman mosaics. I work only in marble or, for wall mosaics Smalti (cut glass used mostly for Byzantine mosaic copies).

I make copies of these mosaics for museums and private clients and work as a craftsman who interprets an artists vision into stone or glass. I can't draw to save my life and have no interest in creating my own pictures

Saying that though I always remember reading some of David Gemmell's fantasy books and in there he mentions mosaic floors. It's always made me wonder what these floors would be like in those worlds, and now I want to bring some to life.

As I said I'm not an artist sooooooo,

For some projects starting next year I'm looking for an artist to work with to produce something. They need to be well versed in fantasy stuff (whatever that means, I doubt you can get a GCSE in it  ) as they would not only need to create the drawings but also have a picture in their head of where the floor/wall mosaic actually is.

From a rough drawing (I don't expect a fine art piece of an entire floor mosaic if I will only create sections) of the complete figural mosaic I could pick out a detail at first to create, initially using marble. We can then take it from there. The mosaic would be figures or fantasy/mythical animals with a surrounding geometric boder.

The possibilties are endless but I have certain rules I have to work to and will need to work closely with the artist in the interpretation. Just to give you an idea the mosaic will be created using roughly all the same size pieces, 5mm or preferably 10mm so the smallest line would have to be this width at a minimum.

This is something I've wanted to do for a few years now and there's a whole load of other factors to consider but I'd love to do it. Saying that it would run it as a part of my business as it will take up time and the costs in materials alone are high, £300 per square metre in 10mm marble pieces or £600 m2 in smalti.

The artist needs to work to a high standard and have a real interest in this as a creative idea and not just a business opportunity. I'm based in Suffolk but it can be worked over the internet.

Hopefully I've not rattled on too much, this is something that I want to make fun to do so if you're interested have a look at my work on the websites. www.minervaesacrum.com (currently down but I'm chasing the server ) and www.romanmosaicworkshops.com It's also worth having a look at some Roman and Byzantine mosaics to get an idea of how they look.

I've just been directed to this by a friend and although I haven't actually mentioned it to my son, yet, there is a possibility he could be interested.

He doesn't have his own website yet but posts some of his work on DeviantArt. His page is http://volt-reborn.deviantart.com/ have a look in his gallery to see the variety and standard of his work. If you are interested in contacting him his contact details are on that page.

My wife could well be interested, I'll speak with her this evening.

If you have not got anywhere to date drop me a PM.

Cheers
