Now I need to know what to do with it !

I have a horn but it is not ready to be used as yet - it is all clean, but how do I waterproof it and put a shine on the outside of it - ? varnish ? wax

help !

My first cow horn came straight from a local abattoir and had to be boiled for a few days (outdoors) to remove all the gunk. Then I allowed it to dry out in a shady place before taking gradually finer grades of sandpaper to the outside, finishing with very fine wire wool - this alone starts to give a decent polish. Then plenty of elbow grease with a dry cloth - I think I used a very small amount of wax polish as a final touch. The horn needs no other treatment - it will hold water (or ink, or ale) just as it is.

Or you could just use a power drill, dolly mop and plastic polish from Cetem.

Depends how much work you want to put into raising a shine I suppose.

What you should do more than anything is to save one horn and prepare it s you can use it to stuff sausages. I have done so at a few Viking Age markets and it worked quite well.
