teutonic banner 1222?

Post by teutonic knight »

dose anyone know the actual battle banner used by the teutonic knights in 1222, I have found loads of diffrent banners but none of them are overly spercific on when they were used. if anyone could offer some insite into this it would be most usefull. was it just a back cross on white or was there more detail to it?

I hope to hear from you all soon.

Gavin.

As the order still exists and presumably keeps extensive records, why not ask them directly?

Have a look at http://www.milites-theutonici.de
This is my old group in Germany. They reenact Teutonic Order 1223.

To our knowledge the correct field banner would either be the black cross on white, or for elevated stations the black cross with the golden cross of Jerusalem overlaid (as shown on the website). The famous "Grand Masters Banner" including the Imperial Eagle on a heartshield appears only a few years later, after Frederick II. elevated the orders grand masters to the status of Imperial Princes.

Hope this helps.

Oh, and I would not recommend asking the actual Teutonic Order regarding reenactment stuff :)
