Grisset pan

Postby The Iron Dwarf » Mon Apr 20, 2009 9:24 pm

anyone know what this is

Image

it has 3 legs and sits at an angle, the one in the middle of the right hand side is very short but does not look broken off, the thick bit to the left is obviously a handle, the dish is about 10" from end to end and about 3" deep.
can anyone help?

Yes a view from below might help, so we can see how the legs splay out, maybe it sat on top of something? Is the corrosion similar all around?

looks like a "grisset" used for making rush lights.....heat the fat in the pan and run the rush from one end to the other.

Now there's two kinds of wet in my pants!

Seconded on the grisset pan.

See Fire & Light in the Home by John Caspall, originals like the one you posted up are rare as rocking horse pooh.

Make rushlights? Just an idea.

I posted it on 23rd April. But never mind - you not getting it would account for why you haven't replied.

I asked how much you wanted for your grisset.

have checked my email and nothing there, I do normally get a couple of PMs a day and have recieved 2 ok today.

after I found out what it was and how rare they are I did a quick google and found http://www.keithhockin.com/misc.php scroll right till you get to it.
also seen 2 in auctions for ammounts that made me fall over literally!.

I have been advised by someone here to contact one of the major auction houses to see what they think but as im in no hurry I am finding out more about it first.

another person here asked about making one and I think I could make something that looks similar that could be used so I will look into that a little more.

everything at the moment is a mad rush trying to get ready for several events and keeping up with orders hencd I have only just got home and still have several hours work to do before I can eat for the first time today
