Vamplates

Postby Annis » Fri Jan 04, 2008 12:08 pm

Were these ever made/used in brass?

Because I'm sure thats what I saw in a pub on my birthday last year. Unless its one of those crazy modern, decorative feature, ideas because brass is a bit flexible isnt it? Or is that only pins?!

Thanks
Annis x

I have no idea if they were made in brass or not, but brass is in fact rather strong. Just about anything will flex when it is pin sized, but with the right alloying it can be very solid.

Right, ok. So it is possible for them to be made out of brass. Now just to know when/if they ever came into use.

There are a number of existing vamplates which are gilded steel.

Brass would be between 2 and 3 times the weight for the equivalent strength of steel. If someone was rich enough to afford jousting, they would be more likely to have gilded steel.

I would suspect if the item you saw was solid brass, it was either a replica or something else.
