Cupping?!?!?!?!?

Postby lidimy » Sat Dec 01, 2007 6:38 pm

Was doing some research and came across this picture. It was simple named 'cupping' and dated to 1519, not entirely sure but I think the country of origin is Germany.

Can anyone enlighten me to what this procedure is?

Which from looking at the picture would make sense - man holding cloth, vessels on the floor...

Basically, you scratched the skin with a blade, then warmed a glass cupping vessel and applied it over the wound, the cooling glass makes a slight vacuum which helps encourage the blood to flow. ( End result a bit like applying leeches, but suitablefor vegans if you want to think of it that way  )

Still happens to day- infact I know of one research project at the moment for EBCH/clinical purposes.

(Oriental and European cupping is fairly similar in pactice- even if the underling logic is fairly different)

Says you!

Besides, my idea was perfectly plausable... it's just a fault of my visual perspective. I thought the basins were under the bench, not behind.

About two and a half minutes in, after the leeches have finished he gets a good ol' cuppin'

This is not one to try if you haven't done it before. I have a nice crescent shaped burn mark on my arm from some 'experimental archaeology' that went wrong. its not as easy as it would first seem!!

Dont worry, I'm not going to attempt anything like that! It's just interesting to see it in action.

The trick is to get cupped, then tell tales of fighting off a Kraken (monster squid) during your travels.

The cupping will leave you with marks which will support your story.....

Not sure about its use in medieval times, but it is still used today as a form of deep massage. As described above the cups are heated and placed on the skin. As they cool the partial vacuum (caused by the warmer, less dense air inside the cup cooling) draws on the muscle under the skin. Depending on the required effect larger or smaller cups are used.

I think I have this right - our pilates instructor had it done recently.

A quick search for cupping shows that as well as its apparent medicinal effect it is also used for more sensual purposes.

It would have been used in medieval times where the patient was not up to being bled to rebalance the humours - ie pregnant women.

Like what Gwyneth Paltrow did have.

I think what Tod is referig to is .........

So, when someone comes home from the office christmas party and their spouse asks about the Love Bites, they have an excuse of "Oh, I have just been to a Phlebotamist for some blood letting"
