On the subject of artificially enhanced gemstones, I once saw rock crystal that had been exposed to gold vapour in a vacuum. The normal clear and colourless rock crystal had turned an amazing transparent blue. 8)

This is called "Aqua Aura" and the coating is very thin, and can rub off.

A whole range of other metals can be used, with various colours as the result.

Concorde (the plane) had a gold plated windscreen to avoid cosmic radiation because it was flying so high.
