Our victim for this uses his heater shield to cover his groin. However the ladies on camp noticed he gradually raises it as the arrows fly in. So they started aiming high, getting his shield up then dropping aim to his now exposed jewels!

The English Warbow Society are always on the lookout for live targets.

120+lb bows and armour-piercing bodkins at close range - a true 'historical experience' for the recipient!

Surprisingly, we get very few volunteers (and our insurance company seem to get upset, too)

For that full Towton experience you could just wait for the next snow storm and shoot at each other.

What surprised me when I've been on the receiving end as in the pics was the individual noise that each arrow made as it whizzed past, each with a different pitch - at least I think "pitch" is the correct term, but you know what I mean.

Quite surreal with a dozen or so arrows but the sound effect of several thousand must have been 'orrible.

Don't under-estimate the fear factor of massed arrows.

You'd see the arrows go up - and know there were a LOT of them coming your way - then they'd 'disappear' at apogee, giving you 2 - 3 seconds to wonder where they were going to land. All you could do is wait. And hope they weren't going to land on you.

There`s nothing like the smell of freshly cut pine as a rubber tip (red head) snaps off on the snout of your houndskull and the rest of the shaft drives itself into your ocular slit, missing your eye by fractions of an inch.........or should that have been the smell of freshly cut sh*t....?
