Oooh nice one of me in the Battle of Champions on the Saturday (plate, red plume), and before anyone goes "bad shot to the neck!", it wasn't a shot, I merely placed my sword on his shoulder to mimic cutting his throat as part of finishing off :)

Yeah! But then Templecombe is hardly the epitome of authenticity. We had Dark Agers and late c15th folks on the field together, after all, so what's a pair of wellies among friends eh!

Twas very muddy- orders were to wear sensible shoes (I wore my medi boots rather than dark age with DA kit as they hed some grip rather than none! But yes people wore allsorts (not the sweets)- including knights with wellies :P .

Just checked my video footage- handn't noticed the number of wellies and combat boots on the field at the time

Mind the organisers told the public this would happen and why! Personally think they have less grip than decent boots (with the exception of DA turnshoes :!: :!: ).

The battlefield itself, excepting the "lake and associated marshland" at the bottom end (from which we were marshalled away), was actually pretty much mud-free and not slippery at all. I went on with normal medieval boots and didn't have any problems. I had kinda assumed the "wear wellies" suggestion I saw on this forum referred to the site in general rather than the battlefield, but hey...

In the event I don't think it detracted from the public's enjoyment of the battle or the show, so no harm done! :D

As I said it would have been suicidal wearing dark age turnshoes- just rounded leather no heel- no grip in the pallisade where we were. My medi boots were fine but not everyone does both periods. Personally I'd have at least disguised any modern footwear had I worn any, but there you are!

Anyway, cracking show :D

Pfft, I had the best grip on the field.
Barefoot all the way baby.
Still, was a touch disconcerted to find nettles behind the pallisade, until I found a patch of dock leaves to stand on :p
