I'm making myself a spencer in blue velvet with a white lining and gold buttons. I want it to reflect a naval uniform. But I'm stuck on the gold braid.
What type?
How do I apply it and where?
Should I pipe the jacket seams?
I've been googling images but can't find a consistent style…was it a bit free and easy style wise back then?
I've started on my bonnet.

But still deciding upon which colour to make the dress.

I think you have pretty much a free hand. Look at naval officer's uniforms and pick up style features you like to incorporate into your design, Regarding gold braid, bias and stand was the pattern used by the navy around the period.

I'm tempted to make a matching skirt for a 'riding habit' look.
