August 2014
Like most WW1 groups, we were booked up long ago for events next year particularly in August- having fielded some queries about availability next year, I thought it would be good if there was a single place to which event organisers could be directed showing them what various groups were doing next year.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

How do you mean Czar tank, like a website? my initial thought is a website which groups display their events lists and contact details - so someone approaches one of us and asks "do you know any ww1 groups that can..." answer "yes, but go on ..... to check availability" and thus person can peruse the website looking through a list of ww1 groups and check their availability with ease, without having to remember numerous websites. is that the sort of thing you mean?
Re: August 2014
a facebook page would probably be the easiest way to do it. The page front can be general discussion and advertisement - ie people can post about their groups or events or even suppliers etc. the an events page, listing as many events as possible - people can contribute to the events page by suggesting events and putting their group attendance on comments wall of each individual event they're going to. we could give it a whirl, all we need is a catchy name and an interesting profile picture.....but if you like i don't mind setting one up, make you an admin with all the manager and admin powers. another thought - people can post their pictures in the galleries, on the wall etc - basically could make it a general ww1 interest group but with an extensive events list with a good idea who is participating?

Bob? Miss Costello - which forum is that one? have you got a link?
Re: August 2014
Blackadder goes forth - Bob
my thought is that the site should be about the people involved in portraying the period as re enactors.
and more about our way forward for people who take it to the public
most existing forums do have a tendency to be more of a research type background, and of course the ones I have been on have a tendency to be riddled with people wanting to put on a generals uniform and take the credit for the hard work of the groups.

Well, this is run by a very nice lady who is a historian but it's very much an information sharing place.

I'm sure that the recent influx of people from WW2 to Great War might change things a little but right now it's the only place for British based GW LH bods.

Re: August 2014
Excuse my butting in
but would this be a good place to ask if anyone knows of any groups who would have a 'place' for women doing WWI? I'm asking for myself a bit (mid 20s, single girl) but also for someone else (also female, older) who is a local historian and would like to be involved.
Thanks

Thanks

Grania, what do you want to do? apart from the group mentioned above, a number of groups have nursing units, one or two, such as the Rifles , have home front sections including mutionettes: And my group 1914-21, has a full, all female combat unit; the 1st Russian Women's Battalion of Death- there is a wide variety of roles you can choose from.

Hi
To be honest, I don't really mind what I do to a degree - although, being a girl on my own, as it were, I don't want to end up as a spare part. I am mildly disabled (not badly, but I'm not brilliantly mobile and walk slightly oddly sometimes) so combat probably isn't for me, but otherwise it's just a matter of really wanting to be involved. Nursing/similar or home front would probably be best.
I've just come across an awful lot of groups (in a variety of periods) where women, and especially single women, appear to have very little they can be actively involved with - I was even very disappointed to meet one group who would not accept membership of single women
, so as much as anything I've been trying to find where I could be useful
Thank you
G

Re: August 2014
I'm setting up a facebook page for women in the UK who do a Great War portrayal, there are quite a few who are looking for a role and don't want to be tied to a group of chaps and playing second fiddle!
I'll post a link when it's up and running.

just seen this, late to the party .... sigh
Grania, depending on where you are and (as others have all said) what you fancy doing, we're based in Wales, have small FANY contingent (mounted and dismounted) and are developing a slightly wider look at other women's roles. Really open to other women's services depending on what your ideas are!
