Hi All, I recently found out my Grandad was a Defence Equipped Merchant Ship Gunner in WWII but the info I have is vey limited.

All I have is his Navy record which shows he was paid from various paystations during the war including a couple in Australia (Woollammoloo) which seem to be some sort of training stations named after ships like the HMS Golden HInd I and Golden Hind II and the HMS Presidend 111 which was a naval base...

It looks like he was fighting at sea on the merchant ships from 3rd may 1942 to 14th Nov 1945 and i would love to find out more about him and what ships he was on etc and whether he saw action etc, he never talked about it my mother and aunts tell me and unfortunately he dies when I was young so I never got chance to ask him about it.

I have a pic of him in his Navy uniform with my Gran which I have attached...

His Name was John Law and he was from Rochdale Lancashire.

Can anybody give me any advice where I might be able to find out more about him and what he actually might have got up to in the war please ?

I know there are sites you can sign up to but dont know where to start really and whether the information they have woud give me ny more info that photocopies of his Navy record and birth certificate etc.

Picture attached, he looks very young in the picture and he has his DEMS arm badge on, apparrently the Q on the badge means qualified but I just read that online, of course I only remember him as a spritely old man.

I was thinking if I dont find out about him and pass on his story he may well be forgotten and wth it being rememberance weekend I have been thinking not only about him but my Grandma who was left at home....

Wow, brave men. Oddly enough was just reading a friends Facebook status about meeting a DEMS veteran today! He seems pretty clued up on the subject.

Not sure if he's a member on here. Will direct him this way..

I now have lots of interesting info to share about DEMS D.E.M.S.

Defence Equipped Merchant Ships

Turns out my Granddad had 8 medals in total but for some reason two of them had to be " CLASPS" rather than medals....

There was a limit on how many you could have... and clasps you could only have one per campaign..

For specific ww11 there is a lot of wisdom on wwiireenacting.co.uk/forum/ Hoping that you have his name and service number searches should be relatively simple.
