Great War Cavalry Reenactment

Hello all,

I'm venturing a few hundred years out of my comfort zone (15th century) here, so please bear with me. :P

My reenactment team is looking for opportunities to go multiperiod, and of all the options we discussed, Great War reenactment was the most fascinating to us, so it's up to me to have a look at the basics and see what we can achieve. If we are going to do something, we'd like to do it right. ;)

We would like to start a Great War cavalry unit, preferably something based on a continent unit (we're actually considering to portray Germans - or is that not done?)

I'm bascially looking for some good sources for information (books/websites/videos) and for vendors (preferably online) who sell the neccesary equipment.

Yes, German involvement isn't frowned upon as it sometimes is with WW2 LH.

Try contacting Steenie on here who is heavily involved with cavalry antics. For uniform, try Richard underwood (Imperial German uniform)

Or if you do decide to do British (hurrah!) try Khaki Devil or Pegasus Militaria.

Sing out if I can help.

Also look up the 16th Lancers as I think they are the most active WWI cavalry unit.

They also have their own bridle maker which is handy, and they can point you away from the sutlers you want to avoid.

One of my guys got a "value" set of WWI cavalry kit which self destructed over a weekend.

Ahh, I see you are in the Netherlands.

Does Derk Groeneveld ride with you?

Albert Van Ee may be able to help you with WWI stuff as I think he goes later than Napoleonic

Sorry for the late reply everyone, I've been away from the boards for a while (busy december month!). Thank you all for your advice and thoughts.

@ Andy: nope, and I'm afraid the name doesn't ring a bell. Up until this point, we have only been involved in late medieval reenactment and have done only medieval events and ren fairs, so unless Derk is working that circuit, I don't think we've come across one another.

Derk jousts with one of the Dutch jousting groups who work on the international circuit.

They have a website somewhere, but I'll be damned if I know what they are called.

I googled him and found that he has ridden with the HEI foundation in the past. I'm not sure that he still does, though. I've worked together with the HEI riders a few times, but never met him. Or maybe he only does the international events? :)

Derk stopped jousting a few years ago. He now does Napoleonic cavalry, same group as I'm with. I see him this wednesday, I'll notify him about this topic.

I had a go in the 1990's but fell off our horse to often so stopped. Indeed I have sold a large proportion of my cavalry kit, but there is still the hub of the website I used to run called WW1 Horse. You can see it here http://www.homefrontfriends.org.uk/wwihorse/ although it terms of web design it is looking a bit dated now
