Lee Enfield Breach Covers

Post by Marghec »

Hi,

Can anyone please advise me when canvas breach covers were first officially used by the British Army for Lee Enfields. I have seen many anecdotal refferrences, and have seen photographic evidence of a variety of home made, locally adapted, rags etc used, but am looking for documentary or photographic evidence of issued items. Also any evidence of them being used by mounted troops.

Thanks,

John Tremelling

Been keeping an eye on this one, but since no one has replied I dug out the answer from the website below - 24th June 1915 was the date they were officially introduced into service in the LoC:

Thanks for the info Lord Byron. Also for the link. I knew that the info would be out there somewhere, but being an ageing technocretin could not find it myself.

Best wishes,
