Great War Events
Hello,
I have a few questions if you wouldn't mind indulging me. I have only realy experienced multi-period events and earlier periods, and was wondering.....
are there many Great War themed events on this country?
at what type of venue are they held?
who would we contact if we wished to participate?
what format do they take ie. battle re-enactment (is that poss?) or living history display?
would anyone be open to horses, either as a static living history display (first person if required) or mounted display?
All answers and thoughts would be apprecieated,
thanks,
Chris

RTB, I saw a display by the Great War Society at Fort George a few years ago.
No firing weapons (although they all carried rifles, or in the cast of the officer, a pistol)
No fighting
And out of all the groups there, it was the most impressive.

Hi Allan, hows things?
I would have thought it would be difficult to stage a Great War Battle. I'm sure English Heritage had some trenches dug at Kirby Hall a few years ago?
Did they do living history with a bit of drill thrown in?

Chris, it is, quite simply, outstanding.RTB wrote:Hi Allan, hows things?

They went into the arena and did a display and talk on their weapons, life in the trenches and amazing details about what the soldiers went through - did you know that when soldiers went over the top they had to unload their rifles as they were expected to use the bayonet?
They did that for about ten minutes, all the while the officer is checking on his pocket watch. Then they formed up in a line, the officer took out his whistle, checked his watch a final time, then he blew the whistle and they advanced.
And that was it, simply outstanding.
