does anyone have any info on measuring things.
i am gesing they had some sort of tape measure made out of rope.

I cannot say with any confidence WHAT they measured with, but I can tell you the UNITS they measured in (at least for France that is) thanks to Wikipedia (but then you have to be careful what part of France you are in)

Foot and Yard rulers were used by carpenters
Example of the markings on the rulers are to be found at the Mary Rose Museum or in the "Before the Mast" book of artefacts from the ship.
