ECW battle in Par?

Postby Mordengaard » Mon Sep 13, 2010 1:08 pm

My local residents group are attempting to stop some development behind where we live. Nearby Castle Dore was used during the English Civil War but they're hoping there's some information somewhere that might pertain to this area (50.352972,-4.695504) that will give them some ammunition (no pun intended). If anyone has some references or information I can pass on, that'd be awesome.

I was in Par earlier this year and I saw a flyer for a talk on the ECW in the area. Perhaps the speaker at that event may have some information?

July/August 1644 saw Essex's march into Cornwall. Several battles around Lostwithiel region, but the army is trapped there. The cavalry breakout at and reach Portsmouth. The infantry try to breakout but are cornered at Castle Dore and are captured. On the march back to Portmouth sorely treated by the locals, many die of exposure. Essex escapes in a fishing boat and doesn't get blamed for the disaster.
